Today marks the 23rd year anniversary of the death of Late Kudirat Abiola.
Kudirat was murdered on June 4th, 1996, because she believed that an electoral mandate given to her husband during June 12, 1993, democratic election could not simply be set aside.
Here are 11 things you probably didn’t know about Kudirat Abiola.
- Kudirat Abiola was assassinated whilst her husband, Moshood Abiola was being detained by the Nigerian Government
- She was born in 1951 in Zaria in Nigeria.
- She attended Muslim Girls High School, Ijebu Ode.
- She got married to Chief Abiola at age 21.
- Alhaja Kudirat Abiola was the second and senior wife of her husband.
- Her children with her husband were Yusau Olalekan, Hafsat, Olaronke, Abdul Muman, Hadi, Moriam and Khalifa.
- Her husband had over sixty other children.
- Her husband was believed to have been the winning candidate on June 12, 1993, Nigerian elections and he was arrested shortly after the polls.
- According to accounts her murder was ordered and carried out by six men.
- She died in her car as a result of injuries sustained from machine gun fire. Her driver also died.
- Her personal assistant who was later accused of being involved with her assassins was in the car but was not hurt.
