Biden versus Trump. Some speculate that the future of the republic hinges on the outcome of the next election. But for smart investors, it doesn't really matter who wins.

Conventional wisdom says that those liberal Dems are generally bad for the economy and the stock market because of their big-government tendencies, while fiscally conservative Republicans are good. This widely accepted belief is actually fake news if you look at data going back to the end of World War II.
“Stock markets do perform better under Democrats than under Republicans. That’s a well-known fact, but it does not imply cause and effect,” says Jeremy Siegel, the Russell E. Palmer Professor of Finance at the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania. From 1952 through June 2020, annualized real stock market returns under Democrats have been 10.6% compared with 4.8% for Republicans.
With the 2020 election less than four months away, some investors are fretting about the pros and cons of a Trump vs. Biden presidency. A Democratic sweep would almost certainly mean a rollback of Trump’s massive corporate tax cut (a negative for stocks), but additional economic stimulus (which the market apparently loves despite deficit implications) and stability on the China trade front would be a big positive.

Leah Sharibu’s father reacts to Saraki’s donation

Leah Sharibu
Leah Sharibu

The father of Leah Sharibu, the schoolgirl held by Boko Haram, on Monday reacted to the donation made by the former Senate President, Bukola Saraki, who gave out part of his severance allowance to the girl’s family.
Nathan Sharibu, a civil servant, spoke to PREMIUM TIMES in a telephone interview where he confirmed reading the news about Mr Saraki’s charity, online.
The grieving father commended Mr Saraki for having the issue of their abducted daughter in mind, despite the end of his tenure as Senate President.
In a statement issued to the media on Sunday, the former Senate President instructed the National Assembly management to distribute all of his severance allowances to the families of some victims of the Boko Haram who lost their loved ones, including the Sharibus’, whose daughter, Leah, is still in captivity.
Miss Leah was the only schoolgirl held back by Boko Haram after the insurgents had returned the 110 abducted female students of Government Girls Science and Technical College, Dapchi, in 2018.
She was held back because she reportedly refused to denounce her Christian Faith.
Mr Saraki had instructed that 20 per cent of what is due to him as severance allowance be given to Leah Sharibu’s parents.
He had also instructed that “20 per cent is also to be paid to the family of Hauwa Liman, one of the two aid worker brutally murdered by Boko Haram after she was captured in Rann, the headquarters of KalaBalge local government of Borno state.
“Another 20 per cent is to be donated to the family of the second aid worker, Hussain Ahmed Khoisan, also murdered in the same circumstance, by Boko Haram.
According to him, the remaining 40 per cent should be used by the National Assembly management to set up a Trust Fund that would assist children of deceased members of the eight Senate who are in financial need for their education.
Reacting to this, Mr Sharibu said: “we read it on the internet last night and we were struck with mix feelings.”
“Each time we hear the name of our daughter mentioned in the media, our expectation is to hear the good news of her release. But, yesterday, we heard what the Senate President said should be extended to Leah’s family.
“We thank him, not necessarily because he is giving out money; no. But for the fact that he still has our daughter in mind; and that gives us a lot of hope that Nigeria has not forgotten her.
“Money is good, but what can be compared to having our dear daughter back in our arms? That means a lot to us.”

The new Director-General of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC), BShuaibu Ibrahim, on Monday, decried the conditions of orientation camps in some states and inadequate facilities in others across the country.
Mr Ibrahim said at the ongoing 2019 Batch ‘B’ Pre-Orientation Workshop in Lagos that the camps had become dilapidated, with inadequate facilities.
He said that the NYSC Act placed the responsibility of construction and maintenance of camp facilities on state governments.
He appealed to state governments to provide permanent camps and upgrade facilities for corps members in the affected states as the scheme did not have the mandate to build and rehabilitate camps.
“Permit me to use this forum to remind stakeholders that the NYSC Act puts the responsibility of provision and maintenance of orientation camps on the state governments.
“The NYSC does not have the mandate to construct orientation camps.
“This reminder has become necessary in view of the current dilapidated condition of many orientation camps and the inadequate facilities across the country.
“Therefore, I wish to renew our appeal to the state governments to rise to the occasion by providing permanent camps and upgrading facilities as necessary,” he said.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that 36 state coordinators and the Federal Capital Territory, Abuja, are currently participating in the technical session of the workshop.

Review:New Message App Initiates To Rival WhatsApp, Telegram With Innovative Features

Business Insider SSA talks to tech entrepreneur and CEO of EQUIIS Technologies, Derek Roga, about his company’s expansion to Nigeria.
Derek also shares insight on how his company, through Flaim app, is planning to rival tech giants in the social media application.
Flaim is a new messaging app that allows users to stay in touch within a community just like WhatsApp and Telegram.
Last month, security hacks on the WhatsApp, known to be end-to-end encryption, raised fresh concerns about the messaging platform. The major breach allowed hackers to install spyware on some users’ phones by simply calling them through the app.
Amid global concerns as Mark Zuckerberg’s WhatsApp and Facebook Messenger continue to differentiate from one another, meet consumer needs, strict sanctions, and follow GDPR regulations, Business Insider SSA by Pulse talked to a tech entrepreneur, Derek Roga, about this development and how his firm, EQUIIS Technologies, is rivalling the tech giants in social media application.
Derek Roga.
In this interview, Derek Roga, CEO of EQUIIS Technologies, also corroborated Telegram’s CEO recent statement on why WhatsApp will continue to face privacy issues.
EQUIIS Technologies’ product, Flaim, is a new messaging app that allows users to stay in touch within a community just like WhatsApp and Telegram.
Here’s an excerpt of the interview which has been edited for clarity sake.
BISSA: Tell us about EQUIIS technologies?
Derek Roga: EQUIIS is headquartered in Zurich, Switzerland, and is one of the global leaders in providing secure, encrypted and auditable messaging solutions for companies, governments, and organizations.
BISSA: Tell us about your plan to enter the Nigerian market?
Derek: We decided to enter the Nigerian market as it is one of the biggest economies in Africa, but also has a large, young and engaged population and a large portion of smartphone users, so we felt it was the right country to start our African launch.
BISSA: One of the most important aspects of mobile apps is data privacy, how would you rate tech giants in this regard?
Derek: Thanks to the media, a lot of bad practices have come to light and we look at what the tech giants are doing as “Data Piracy” instead of “Data Privacy”.
Moreover, we feel that users have not been treated fairly and lured into giving away their data in exchange for free features which has eventually only helped the tech giants and not really benefited the users. With Flaim, each person is the owner of their own data; they should have complete rights to how their data is used or monetized. We do this through our personal data vault.
BISSA: Briefly explain what happened with the recent WhatsApp Hack.
Derek: We don’t have all the details of course, but it is regrettable that an application as popular as WhatsApp didn’t have the measures in place to prevent that.
The fundamental question we ask ourselves is if they were not able to properly protect their own app, how can they assure us they can protect our data. In fact, as recently as April 2019, Facebook the parent company of WhatsApp has hundreds of millions of their subscribers data exposed in the Amazon Cloud.
BISSA: Recently, Telegram’s founder, Pavel Durov, said WhatsApp can never be secure – what do you think about development?
Derek: Almost all messaging and social apps use open source encryption which is well documented as being secure, 100% security is a claim no one should ever make.
The challenge WhatsApp faces is the business model of their parent company is based purely on leveraging people’s data, that in of itself begs the question around the security effectiveness. Apps like Flaim and Telegram are built with security and privacy from the ground up, therefore the inherent architecture assures the security integrity.
BISSA: Flaim, tell us about it and why it should be an option for people?
Derek: We launched Flaim in Nigeria on the 19th of May and by the 22nd of May we had recorded over 100,000 downloads making us the fastest growing app in Nigeria; since then we added another 100,000 downloads and growing on a daily basis.
One of the reasons why it took off so quickly is because we had a campaign where we offered users free data for downloading the app and inviting their friends, and that went viral quickly. Another reason is that we care about privacy and we don’t own the users’ data, nor will we check the user’s data, and that is a game-changing proposition.
Our studies revealed that Nigerians actually care about that as most free apps are built on the business model of aggregating and using user’s data.
BISSA: What essential features will the app offers Nigerians?
Derek: A major value proposal for the user is that Flaim continuously rewards users for being on the platform and being engaged, and we are giving away prizes which range from free data to mobile phones and other goods that come from us and our sponsors, and that is very compelling for most Nigerians who have seen apps eat up their data, without giving anything back.
Derek says the platform also offers users the control over their data and their privacy with features like ‘Do Not Disturb’. The company is also testing a version of Flaim that works on Edge networks, so that rural communities in Nigeria can enjoy VOIP calls.

N30, 000 New Minimum Wage started April 18, FG insists

The Federal Government has said that no governor in the 36 states of the federation will say that he will not pay the new minimum wage of N30, 000.

Minimum Wage: NLC, TUC laud Buhari over assent Minister of Labour and Employment, Senator Chris Ngige who stated this in an interview in Abuja, weekend, maintained that payment of the new wage started from April 18, when President Muhammadu Buhari signed the Minimum Wage Amendment Act Bill into law.

The Minister said that it had become imperative that all employers of labour in the country should comply with the law which he said was national law, adding that a committee was working out a new template for upward consequential adjustment for those already earning above N30,000.

Security in Tatters: Govt ignored warning banditry, kidnapping, killings would escalate, spread to Katsina, Kaduna, Sokoto – Researcher (Opens in a new browser tab) Describing the negotiation for a new minimum wage as a tortuous one, he advised employers of labour especially those who have not started implementation of the new law to do so in order to avoid accumulating arrears.

He said, “It is a national law and no governor can say he will not pay. Issue of the national minimum wage is item 34 on the exclusive legislative list of the third schedule of the Nigerian constitution.

Fulfil your promise of constructing resettlement homes for herdsmen victims, Benue govt appeals to FG(Opens in a new browser tab) “Issue of labour is also there and not on the concurrent list. If it is on the concurrent list, then they can make their own state Assembly laws on that.

Every state government is now owing workers if they have not to start paying N30,000. “They (employers) are owing workers effective from 18th of April, a new minimum wage. We are now in a committee working out a new template with which we will adjust upward the consequential adjustment upstairs for those already earning above N30,000. “The minimum wage is for the most vulnerable down the ladder and that is the man on grade level one step one. So, you must consequentially adjust for the man on grade level two, grade level three, grade level four and five, because that man on GL 1 step 1 has overtaken them with his new payment. “That is what we refer to as consequential adjustment.

This consequential adjustment touches more the people on the lower ladder and we are working it out. The negotiation is going to be with the Joint Negotiating Council in both the federal and at the state level. “What we are trying to do now with the Salaries and Wages Commission is that we have a technical committee working out what the federal government will do for their workers and advice the state government appropriately.

“In 2011, there was a mistake in the consequential adjustment in some states when they applied the principle of percentage increase across the board and they ran into trouble and were unable to pay. What this N30,000 translates into is that there is a 67 per cent increase.

“If a state government applies the same 67 per cent increase across board, there will be serious trouble, the same with the federal government and when there is that trouble, there will be trade dispute because the principle of ability to pay will come in and ILO encourages us to apply those principles in our discussion. “If I am unable to pay and my workers know that I am unable to pay, we will sit down and agree on what I am able to pay. So, there is a baseline now as no worker in Nigeria should earn anything less than N30,000 provided that the establishment has more than 25 workers.”

Asked when workers would begin to enjoy the new minimum wage, Senator Ngige whose office midwife the new wage said,” They will enjoy it. In fact, they have started enjoying it. Employers in the private sector adjusted immediately because it is easier for them to do. In the government sector, the bureaucracy and bottleneck of government are responsible for the delay. “You know that you must budget for it. That is what is causing the delay.

But whenever the encumbrances are removed, they will pay arrears with effect from 18th April 2019. “So, the sooner an establishment start paying, the better for you so that you don’t take a huge backlog that you cannot take. If you pay in piecemeal and start going, the better. So, I advise all employers of labour in Nigeria, including state government to immediately set up their Joint Negotiating Councils so that whatever we get from here, we give it to them and they will look at it based on their peculiarities.

“There are no two states that are the same in terms of the revenues coming from the federations account and internally generated revenue. So, when the template from the federal level is given to you, you put it on the table with the Joint Negotiating Council and discuss how it suits you and cut into it as much as possible with the finances available to you. “Luckily, today, the finances of states are known.

Everybody knows what the state is coming from FAAC with. The IGR of most state governments is also known now. So, it is a pleasant situation that we are all in now.” On the recent allegation by the NLC that he was frustrating the implementation of the new minimum wage, he said, “I saw the NLC President on Television saying so.

But that was when they were trying to picket me and I pitied him because he was trying to blackmail me in the wrong direction. “I am the prime mover of the new minimum wage. If you ask anybody in the Federal Executive Council, they will tell you so and the President will also tell you so and he has said so many times. So, the President of the NLC is playing politics.

But he can’t play politics on workers like that. If he wants to play politics, he should leave labour unionism because the Labour laws do not allow labour leaders to play partisan politics.” Reminded that the Academic Staff Union of Universities, ASUU had threatened to resume the strike if the federal government refused to implement the agreements it entered into with the union, Ngige said that he had made it compulsory that every government establishment kept to any agreement.

One of the things that as often led to unrest and strike in the country, especially among government workers is the inability of the government to implement signed agreements with Unions. Right now, ASUU is spoiling for another round of strike. He said, “I have forced government establishments to keep to agreements, especially the ones that we entered into now. Where we have difficulties is the 2009 and 2013 agreements that the then government made.

But nobody wants to know that. “They will tell you that government is a continuum. So, as much as possible, we try to renegotiate some of these agreements to make them realistic.

The ILO principles permit that CBAs that are not feasible can be renegotiated. That is the luck we have and in this Ministry, we have used it to the best of the advantage of the government. “That is why today if you go to the Industrial Arbitration Panel, they are complaining that cases no longer come. We are taking the bullets here and not putting some there.

I have read through cases that go there and discovered that when cases go there, employers are not satisfied and still go to the National Industrial Court and to the Court of Appeal. “As they are doing that, you have a spate of industrial actions because once the worker finds out that you are trying to frustrate them from getting what they believe is theirs, they will find ways of declaring new dispute.

So, now that we are here, we have told the government the truth. I insist and bring government officials here for negotiation. “I don’t take officers for negotiation. The best we can do is for a Minister to come for the first two meetings and then delegate his Permanent Secretary and this has worked. Ministers are Chief Executives of the Ministries and are the ones who will take the major decisions and do a memo to Mr President saying we need this and that. When they do that I collaborate it and they get the necessary funds.

The Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) has resulted in begging with a view to quelling massive protest in Flying Eagles camp over unpaid allowances.

He further told the foreign-based players to make available to the team secretary their bank details as well as a letter of consent” he was quoted as saying by Scorenigeria
The players are said to have revealed that they are owed $5,000 about (N1.5million) each for qualifying for the knock out stage as well as a training allowance.
The team original billed to have left Poland 3am on Tuesday for Nigeria forced FIFA to re-arrange their program which indicates that they may not be home till Thursday or there about if they eventually decide to end the protest.
A protest has in recent times been used by players to get their entitlement from the Glass House who has equally been accused of constantly dragging the nation’s image to the gutters with shoddy plans over player’s payment.

My Experience On Ethiopian Airline That Nearly Crashed In Lagos — Ex-President Obasanjo

Former President Olusegun Obasanjo has narrated his experience while on board an Ethiopian Airline flight that nearly crashed on Wednesday at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport in Lagos.
The airplane, Boeing 777-300, narrowly avoided an accident while trying to land with nearly 400 people on board.
In an exclusive interview with PREMIUM TIMES, Mr Obasanjo said:” he remained calm and read papers while the scary situation occurred.”
“While it all happened, I was reading my papers,” said Mr Obasanjo. “One man, who was next to me, said, ‘Oga you no worry?’ I said, ‘Íf I worry, what will I do? If you are on a plane and you have a situation like this, why should you worry?’ I left everything in the hands of God.”
Mr Obasanjo was returning from a stakeholders dialogue on continental trade and implementation of the African Continental Free Trade Agreement (AFCFTA) which ended on Tuesday in Addis Ababa.
The plane, with 394 persons on board, had a false landing due to strong winds and a heavy downpour and was about to overshoot its runway before it returned to the air.
It later landed safely at the airport after spending about 10 minutes in the air.
Close shave
“I was on Ethiopian Airline. Rain just came down heavily,” Mr Obasanjo recalled.
“The pilot thought he could land. And he landed. He touched down. But I think he took a swift decision that he had to take off again.
“So he took off. If he did not, I think he probably would have overrun the runway. He then apologized and said he would try to land again. He tried again, and we landed safely. And we all clapped.”
The ex-military head of state said the pilot first landed the plane at about 12:20 p.m. before the incident, but finally landed safely on return at 12:30 p.m.
“He touched the ground. Then he took off and apologized and landed again at about 12.30. We spent just about 10 minutes in the air before we landed again,” he said.
Ethiopian Airlines recently suffered a crash of its flight ET302 flying its B-737 MAX 800 aircraft in March which killed all 157 persons on board.
The aircraft en route Nairobi from Addis Ababa, crashed six minutes after takeoff around Bishoftu, 40 miles South-east of the Ethiopian capital.

Two Nigerians died in the crash.

President Buhari Jets Out Today, To Tell World Leaders How To Combat Terrorism In Saudi Arabia

The trip which is his second visit to Saudi Arabia this month is coming a day after his poorly attended inauguration and amidst rising insecurity in the country.
Despite the high rate of insecurity, terrorism, and insurgency in Nigeria, President Muhammadu would be telling world leaders at the Summit of the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) in Makkah, Saudi Arabia, how to tackle terrorism and violent attacks.

President Buhari is expected to leave the country for Saudi Arabia today, a day after he was sworn-in to commence his second tenure in office as President of the country.
According to Garba Shehu, Senior Special Assistant to the President on Media and Publicity, Buhari is "expected to address the forum and underscore the need for member countries to unite and work together to combat common challenges such as terrorism and violent extremism."
He also said the President will push forward themes that have been at the forefront of his domestic and international priorities, including reviving the Lake Chad Basin, investing in Nigeria to create jobs and financing for development.

Kusada vacated the speakership seat after contesting and winning the Kankia, Kusada, Ingawa Federal constituency, House of Representative bye election on November 17, 2018.
Meanwhile, the Incumbent Tasi’u was nominated for the seat following the elevation of Kusada and since assumption of office, he has maintained a robust relationship between the Executive and Legislature in the state. The development is a boost to his chances. Nasiru Yahaya Daura Nasiru Yahaya Daura, member representing Daura Constituency is another good contender for the position.
This was due to the circumstances leading to the elevation of the then speaker, Kusada to the House of Representatives. It was assumed that Daura constituency will be considered to produce the next Speaker owing to the fact that it lost its son, Senator Mustapha Bukar, who died as a serving Senator representing Katsina North. After Senator Bukar’s demise, a bye-election conducted produced the member representing Kusada, Kankia, Ingawa, Ahmad Babba Kaita, as winner, leaving Daura emirate with nothing.
Then, it was speculated that Nasiru Yahaya might be considered for the next speaker but it did not work out. However, Yahaya stands a very good chance now. Nasiru is also the member representing President Muhammadu Buhari’s constituency in the assembly. He might be considered for the position based on the aforementioned. However, only time will tell who emerges the speaker of the 8th  Katsina State House of Assembly.

Cassava is used to produce two popular local food types called Garri and Akpu (or Fufu). Akpu is a white food substance that has been prepared from cassava after allowing for fermentation and later boiled for eating with soup. For Garri, cassava is soaked and fermentation is allowed. Then it grounded, fried and dried for storage purposes. Garri can be in yellow or white colour depending on what type of palm oil was used to fry it. Yellow garri is said to be more nutritious than white garri, since it is fried with palm oil which contains vitamins like A and C. Garri can be taken on its own by soaking in water and drinking, but it could also be mixed with hot water, and be eaten with soup to give a balanced diet, since it is mostly an energy giving food and can help give energy to farm workers, busy professionals, people recovering from malaria, and even used for recovery from alcohol hangover.
Its Effects:
